Using the Mod Squad fabric panel to make a modern baby quilt

52 Week UFO Challenge - Project #30

Nellie and I used Northcott's Mod Squad panel from the ColorWorks Concepts line to make our Modern Vibe quilt pattern. It is a super fun, fast and easy quilt to make for someone youg (or young at heart)!

Since they usually give us extra fabric to work with, I had a second panel left over and just HAD to do something with it.

Instead of just quilting and binding it, I wanted to make it a bit bigger, so I cut rectangles and squares from the chevron fabric and sewed them together in a row with some of the white triangle print.

I then added a white strip to the right hand side and sewed this to the panel. Another white outside border finished it off and set off the colours in the panel SO nicely!!

I used my overlapping box quilting design to quilt the entire top and put a funky orange fabric on the back of the quilt.

Yellow binding looked good from the front AND the back!!

This was a fun and super quick project to make using a panel! Project #30 in my 52 Week UFO Challenge is done and this quilt is now for sale in my Etsy store.

Using up leftovers to make a baby quilt

52 Week UFO Challenge - Project #26 - Leftover braid baby quilt

Last year I made this Braided Lap Quilt which was featured in the Fall 2015 issue of A Needle Pulling Thread Magazine. This quilt was super easy to make because I used my Accuquilt Chisel Die  to cut all of the pieces for the braids.

The ONLY problem I have when I'm using my Accuquilt Studio Cutter is that it's really easy to cut too many pieces!! As a result, I often have shapes left over and I HATE to throw them out.

So, once I had finished this quilt, I had one section of braid left over. I set it aside and once I started my 52 Week UFO Challenge, it was added to the list.

I worked on this quilt top while I was at Quilt Retreat in February. The first thing I did was to sew two borders down the sides of the braid. Then I sewed a large piece of butterfly fabric to the right side and a narrower strip of the same fabric to the left side.

Then I cut this long piece into two sections about 1/3 of the way from one end and sewed five strips of fabric in between the two sections.

I then machine quilted it using large modern flowers all over the top.

The quilt turned out quite pretty AND one of my coworkers has bought it to give as a baby shower gift. I'm sure the baby girl who gets it, will enjoy it for years to come.

Modern Squares baby quilt

52 Week UFO Challenge Project #21 - Leftover squares made into a baby quilt

A couple years ago I went on a baby quilt making spree and ended up with five different baby quilts for expecting co-workers and friends. I also ended up with some leftovers - of course LOL.

I LOVED using the Twister Tool ruler to make a couple of the baby quilts, but for each quilt, after  I used the tool to cut the tessellated blocks I ended up with a bunch of 5" bias squares of fabric.

The Twister Tool and my left over sqauers

I decided to use the squares to make another baby quilt.

First step was to trim the squares so that they were all exactly the same size. I added a few more squares to make up the right number for the quilt.

Next I cut sashing strips from white fabric and sewed one to all but eight of the squares.

Chain piecing the sashing strips to the squares.
I sewed these together into eight rows and then added one of the left over squares to the end of each row. I then added a sashing strip in between each of these rows.

When sewing rows like these together, it's important to make sure that the small sashing strips are lined up correctly.

One the rows were all sewn together, I added a white border to all four sides.

Adding the border

I decided to quilt it using wavy lines that travelled the entire length of the quilt. I lived this design as it was simple to do and added to the modern feel of the quilt. I used cozy Northcott flannel for the backing!!

Wavy quilting lines

Once the quilt was finished, I decided to put it up for sale on my Fairfield Road Designs Etsy shop. To my delight it was bought by a woman in Australia!! Such fun to be part of a global economy!!

Project #21 in my UFO Challenge is finished - and my Modern Squares baby quilt is en route to Oz.

52 Week UFO Challenge - Project #19 - Nautical Baby Quilt

Back before Christmas a co-worker commissioned me to make a baby quilt for her best friend, She knew that the nursery was going to be decorated with a nautical theme, so she asked if I could make the quilt to match. I looked EVERYWHERE for jeuvenile nautical fabric and found nothing!! Finally I found a white/navy/red/medium blue striped fabric that I thought would work (if only for the backing). It couldn't decide what to do with it until one day I was looking on Pinterest and saw a sailboat block - I figured out how the block was assembled and then got to work cutting!!

I found some co-ordinating fabrics in my stash and then used my Accuquilt Studio Cutter and the 3" Half Square Triangle Die to cut them into triangles for the sails on the boats.

For each boat block I sewed four coloured triangles to four white triangles as shown.

I cut 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips of the white fabric and sewed one to each side of the sail sections.

Used my Frixion pen to mark a line on the back of two white 3 1/2" squares and then aligned these onto one 3 1/2" x 12 1/2" rectangle of the striped fabric, right sides together.

I then sewed along the drawn line and then cut off the excess fabric.

I then pressed the unit and sewed it to the bottom of the sail section and then sewed a 3 1/2" x 12 1/2" rectangle to the bottom of the block to create the water.

I sewed these four sailboat blocks together in a row and then added stripes of the other fabrics in varying widths.

My friend, the new mom and baby Colton all loved the quilt and so did I. Project #18 checked off my list!! Here is Colton and his new quilt. What a little cutie!!

Baby quilt #3

Here is the third baby quilt. Don't you just LOVE it when you see a mistake AFTER the quilt is quilted and bound??? Yes, the third row was sewn on upside down. The mainly blue blocks were supposed to be on opposite corners! Oh well, I'm sure the baby won't even notice!!!

Baby quilt #2

The rest of the baby quilts now have their bindings sewn on (thanks Mom!) so here is a picture of the second one that was finished.

Baby quilt bonanza

When we made the Dancing Bugs quilt for Camelot we had many test run blocks that didn't make it into the finished quilt - they just didn't seem to work for us. So when Nellie gave me the bag of left over fabric and blocks, I just HAD to do something with them! Mike has two cousins who are expecting babies and one of the other pharmacist`s at work is pregnant, so I went on a baby-quilt-making spree and churned out FIVE of them! Here is number one - it was given to Mike`s cousin Pat and his partner Marci at her baby shower yesterday. Their baby boy is due this month. The rest of the quilts are quilted, but are awaiting their bindings.
